Some Crystal Ball Stuff
Hg: i think the market is confused at the moment
Hg: it's a time of rapid change and unprecedented flexibility
Hg: it's like the "pocket" market - phones, camera, mp3 players etc
Hg: people aren't really sure what they want
Hg: combined or separates?
Hg: smallest and lightweight, or a little bit bigger but much more powerful?
Hg: local apps or everything online?
Hg: i've seen this in the pc market over the past 15 years
Hg: pcs came along and freed people from dependence on central mainframes through use of spreadsheets etc
Hg: but then companies lost control of data so they tried to centralise again using citrix and thin clients
Hg: that seemed to peter out and there was a swing even more towards local data & apps on pcs
Hg: and now there are web apps and it's swinging back the other way
Hg: but then even google recognises that this doesn't fit everyone's requirement, hence google gears
Hg: it's a very immature market and people are trying things out at the moment, not really sure what works
Hg: i've read a few blog posts over the past few months about people who tried gmail and loved it but have gradually gone back to outlook or thunderbird because they found it restrictive
Hg: there's always a honeymoon period
Hg: i think the future is gonna be about synchronisation
Hg: about having your data available both locally and online and having the best sync possible to make sure that both versions are always the same
Hg: so you can either work offline when you're on your laptop in the channel tunnel
Hg: or you can work online when you urgently need to access a spreadsheet while you're at your friend's house
I Don't Need A Tumblr Account
… is what I keep telling myself. I can shamelessly blog a YouTube video with a one-sentence description at Hydragenic. And yet, I like other people’s. So, I’m going to start using the account that I set up months and months ago. No agenda. As far as I see it, it’s a win/win thing. Either I prove to myself that I really don’t need one, or I end up with a shiny new...
